Get ready to learn the clear, practical and best ways
to improvise that will change your playing forever!
Have you ever thought...
"Why does it seem like my favorite musicians can just play anything on the spot, but when I do it doesn't make any sense? What am I missing?"
"I have spent tons of time practicing scales and licks - why don't my solos sound better?"
"I can improvise over a Blues and other simple chord progressions, but how do I play solos that sound great over ANY set of chord changes?"
Hi, I'm Justin Highland
I'm a jazz musician who has toured and performed around the world, but more importantly I'm an educator dedicated to helping musicians achieve their goals through a clear, structured path to improvisation success.
Jazz improvisation can feel daunting, trust me — I WAS THERE. I spent the first few years of my jazz journey making little progress. But two things happened in years four and five that changed everything: I invested in serious mentoring and started to build out a clear path for learning the core principles of soloing I didn't see being taught anywhere else.
I was stuck. Frustrated. Tired of dreading taking a solo and not knowing what to play. After years of trial and error, I discovered and learned powerful, effective ways of improvising over any song in any style. Those discoveries inspired me to create a roadmap that would help others like you avoid the same struggles.
Now, I’m here to provide you with that exact system—a path to improvisation success. No more wondering if you will make it through a solo. This clear and organized method will empower you to play with purpose, fluidity and meaning, giving you the tools and confidence to thrive.
Listen to what Charles has to say about his experience!
"I wanted to learn jazz piano. For years I tried transcribing, memorizing fakebook tunes, but it didn't get me very far. Justin’s course changed that — I'm super pleased with it, the materials are very, very clear. I've been a professor for over 35 years and this is excellent teaching. It’s unmatched by anything else I've encountered and I’m thrilled to be learning from this."

"Justin's course is incredibly well-organized and easy to follow. The PDF exercises aren’t just theory. They’re practical and instantly usable over real jazz standards. It has been one of the most eye-opening learning experiences I have had in jazz piano!”

Why is there nothing out there
that actually teaches you how to solo?
Learning how to improvise can be extremely unclear, unstructured, or the information is simply unavailable. Have you noticed there are no real clear cut answers for how to actually improvise, or how to improvise effectively like the pros? Or what the steps are to learn how to even solo well in the first place?
I’m here to tell you that it is not your fault. You have been lied to and mislead. You’re told in order to solo you need to transcribe hundreds of licks and phrases from the masters, use x scale over x chord, take years of lessons and spend the rest of your life practicing 8 hours a day. Or studying from books and YouTube videos on topics that really do not cut to the core of what you are trying to learn, or actually get you RESULTS.
I'm here to let you know there IS a solution!
I have some great news: I have distilled everything I have learned in my entire 30+ year music career and what I teach to my private clients into an easy to follow, step by step video course on topics I only wish were around when I started out. This program will show you how to solo and develop your own unique voice without relying on ANY transcribed licks or phrases.
Over the past 15 years, I have worked with different students at all levels in their jazz journey. I came from a Classical background and literally had to start at ground zero with jazz and how to solo. I created and developed principles and concepts that will save you literally years of time and frustration.
For some reason, how to solo and improvise is not really taught. You end up just learning scales, isolated bits of information or transcribed licks, not knowing how to develop your own unique voice. You are told to "just feel it" when soloing, or that some people "have it" and others don't. And I have been there because I was once in your shoes, looking for those very things on how to solo and improvise myself!
So that's why I created...
I know exactly what it is like to dream about playing amazing improvised solos.
I also know what it's like to feel like there is something missing or out of reach.
What was missing was a concise and thorough method to approach how to improvise, and now it's here!
Here's why this will completely TRANSFORM your playing!
• You will learn how to think creatively and compositionally in real time, making intentional choices that flow seamlessly together, without feeling overwhelmed with options.
• You will learn how to approach and use specific soloing techniques that are the most effective for various types of jazz tunes.
• You will learn how to play coherent, melodic solos that tell a story without rambling or dragging through the chord changes, making your solos sound professional and cohesive.
• You will learn and gain a deep and thorough understanding of soloing techniques that you can apply to ANY tune.
• You will learn how to break out of stock soloing traps and habits - becoming intentional and strategic in your choices, drawing from a broad palette of options instead of “hoping for the best” or “guessing.”
• You will learn how to effectively combine different soloing techniques to craft dynamic, engaging and memorable solos that never run out of ideas.
• You will learn to create meaningful, coherent musical phrases, moving beyond just running up and down scales or relying on transcribed licks and phrases.
• You will learn the efficient principles of improvisation to build your own vocabulary without needing to memorize complicated licks and lines, allowing you to develop your own unique and personal musical voice.

So you might be wondering what the
investment is for Meaningful Melodies, right?
Now I’m sure you can see how powerful a program like this is. You are probably wondering, “How much will this cost me?” When I taught these same strategies to my private students, they paid upwards of $6,000 or more over the course of a year.
You could go to the top jazz schools: Berklee, The New School, etc. and spend $10-15K per semester. Or you could spend a lot on subscription lesson sites that have way too many options, no practice structure, or direct feedback. But what you won't get there is the clarity, structure and focused guidance for what works, how to get results, and apply the concepts immediately to your playing.
I want to create as many success stories as possible and do not want you to have to go through the same struggle, confusion and frustration that I did. You are not going to pay $6,000, not even half of that, $2,500. It won't even cost you as much as two private 1-on-1 lessons with me.
I wanted to make this a no-brainer deal for you and truly accessible to the growing improviser, so check this out:
You won’t pay $10,000 and you won’t even pay $1,000, not even $500

I want you to ask yourself, what would it do for you if you could have the tools, the techniques and the know-how to finally be able to solo confidently and strategically, and never run out of ideas on what to play, forever?
What would it be worth to you if you knew that whenever you took a solo you commanded the respect of everyone in the room, but most importantly, yourself? How different would your life look a few weeks from now, a few months from now, a year or more from now?
Or you could make the choice to not go in this direction and your solos will sound the same; You will be back to square one looking for another lick, some flashy technique or be overwhelmed with what will make your solos sound better, when you and I both know that it is not the lick that makes the difference, but your knowledge that makes the difference?
Frequently Asked Questions
You should already be familiar with common scales like Blues, Pentatonics, Major and Melodic Minor scales, and which scales are used over typical chord types in jazz (Dorian for minor 7 chords, Altered for Dominant chords, etc.).
This course focuses on taking your existing knowledge and improvisational skills to the next level, so it is best suited for those with some foundational experience in jazz and is more for early intermediate to advanced players.
While it is helpful to know how to read sheet music, you don't need to be an expert. The course features notated PDFs with examples of right hand melodies on the treble clef.
Even if you are not familiar with reading notation, you can follow along with the videos where I demonstrate the examples on the keyboard that are found in the PDFs, and you will get the same valuable insights. The focus is more on understanding the concepts and applying them to your playing rather than strictly reading or being reliant on sheet music!
Absolutely! This course is designed to be flexible and work around your schedule. Each video is short and focused (10 minutes each on average), making it easy to fit into your day—even if you only have 15-20 minutes to spare. Plus you will have lifetime access, so you can revisit lessons anytime, at your own pace.
This course is not just about showing you what to play—it’s about teaching you how to think, practice, and apply these techniques in a way that truly transforms your playing. You will learn innovative approaches, strategies to break free from your stock habits, and ways to approach soloing creatively and compositionally. Without relying on ANY transcribed phrases and endless licks!
Unlike generic lesson sites or broad jazz improvisation courses, Meaningful Melodies gives you focused, practical steps that are clear, concise, and actionable specifically for soloing, helping you develop your own unique voice as an improviser. I still have yet to see any course over the last 15 years that is like this one.
The course is hosted on a user-friendly online platform that you can access anytime, anywhere, with an internet connection. It’s fully compatible with computers, tablets and smartphones, so you can learn on the go. All videos are streamed online and PDF materials are downloadable for offline use.
Yes! Once you purchase the course, you will have lifetime access to all of the lesson videos, worksheets, and bonus content.
Although I recommend you watch every video to get a well rounded and comprehensive understanding (and to fill in any gaps you may be missing), you can definitely skip around. The modules do not have to be gone through in order, in fact I recommend you first go with the one(s) that inspires and motivates you most!
You will get access to a private Discord community where you can upload examples of your playing, connect and chat with others just like you, and you can ask questions and receive direct feedback from me, personally!
If you do the work, this course will completely change the way you improvise—period. There's no fluff or filler. It gives you a clear, focused system to implement good habits, break bad ones, think musically in real time, and start soloing with real intention and creativity. It is designed to provide you with powerful tools and a clear roadmap for transforming your improvisation.
While completing the course will give you the knowledge and insights you need, it will be consistent and dedicated practice that will truly bring these concepts to life in your playing. The more you engage with the material, the more your skills will flourish over time!
